Unique 4-Leaded RGB LED with Market-Leading 120˚ Viewing Angle

Lumex announces the global launch of the through-hole QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED. With a market-leading 120° viewing angle, the QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED is ideally suited for applications that require high intensity light in spatially restricted spaces. Additionally, the QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED boasts an innovative lead frame design that provides superior heat dissipation and provides opportunities for cost and real estate savings.

The QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED provides excellent visual performance. Whereas a traditional through-hole LED features a viewing angle of 30° to 60°, the QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED has a viewing angle of 120°. The RGB format combined with this extended viewing angle provides consistent, well-matched visual performance and even view angle throughout the display.

The QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED features an enhanced thermal design lead frame, which allows for superior heat dissipation and therefore longer life expectancy. The off-the-board design also provides enhanced convection with air freely passing on all sides of the epoxy for more efficient cooling.

These features make the QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED ideal for applications that require a matrix of high intensity output with a wide viewing angle including:
  •     High Output Signage (close proximity) (such as airport, retail and hospitality signage);
  •     General lighting (decorative lighting, indicator lighting);
  •     Gaming (decorative and indicator lighting throughout gaming machines);
Kay Fernandez, Product Technology Manager at Lumex explains “Lumex’s new through hole 4-Leaded RGB LED features a redesigned lead frame that allows for higher output thermal conductance and provides superior moisture resistance when compared to typical surface-mount devices.”

The QuasarBrite 4-Leaded RGB LED also provides several opportunities for cost and real estate savings. The use of a single 4-Leaded RGB LED can result in up to a 30% cost savings as well as a 70% real estate savings compared to the use of individual red, green and blue packages. Replacing three parts with a single part number also simplifies ordering and maintenance processes.

The RoHS compliant 4-Leaded RGB LEDs (part number SSL-LX503SIUPGUSBC) contain three individual dies in red (635nm), green (520nm) and blue (470nm). Samples of these devices are available from stock, with production quantities in 6-8 weeks.  Pricing is dependent on quantity ordered, and is less than one dollar per unit in production quantities.
