Profibus Supports Smart Instrumentation Seminar The Profibus Group has announced that it has become a supporting partner of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) seminar on smart instrumentation. The seminar will take place in Birmingham on 27 April 2010. The IET will in turn support the Profibus Conference at the end of June 2010. The smart instrumentation seminar will provide a forum for safety-critical industries to discuss how to overcome technical and security hurdles associated with employing smart instrumentation in equipment. Key topics for debate include wireless devices and interoperability, implementing and sharing reliability testing tools, monitoring asset performance with smart instruments, SIL levels using smart instruments, and how to use smart instruments in a system.

Siemens Energyk has welcomed the government's plans for the national roll out of smart meters but says energy-distribution companies need to play an active role if DECC is to meet its targets. Centrally coordinating the communications between smart meters and the utility companies via a proposed central-communications model will provide distribution companies with a development platform for smarter grids and enhanced information about how the network is performing. Details about which parts of the system are heavily used and which are less busy allows them to maximise equipment performance and make more informed decisions based on the stresses a particular component has suffered. Smart metering will enable customers to better understand and take control of their energy consumption in ways that they never could before. It will also pave the way to realising the potential of radical solutions for energy supply, such as combined heat and power and local micro-generation. It will...

Lumasmart Temperature Monitor Is Smart-Grid Ready Lumasense Technologies has announced the release of the Luxtron Lumasmart winding hot-spot temperature monitor. Transformer winding hot-spot temperature is a critical parameter required to manage the loading, life and reliability of transformers. Common devices, such as winding temperature indicators (WTIs) or electronic temperature monitor's (ETMs), try to simulate or calculate this temperature. The only true measurement of this parameter is attained using fibre-optic sensors fitted directly into the transformer's windings. The Lumasmart builds on the ruggedness, reliability and stability of its predecessors, such as the WTS-22 and Thermasset2. The Lumasmart is a smart-grid ready winding temperature hot-spot monitor. For the operator, the touch-screen display on the Lumasmart offers easy-to-use trending tools, graphics and alarm configurability to customise the Lumasmart product to exactly fit their needs. In addition,...
