S Series Shaft Motor Has Combined Linear Encoders The S series shaft motors from Micromech has combined linear encoders, encoder guides and mechanical systems. Shaft motors are direct-drive linear servomotors that consist of a shaft with laminated magnets and cylindrically wound coils controlled by the flow of current. They are a simple construction that use magnetic circuits consisting of permanent magnets and coils. Characteristics of the motors include precision positioning, high and low constant speed performance. The standard versions of most motors including linear motors is that the circuits are made of magnetic iron, while shaft motors are not. This means that there is no adsorption force between the shaft and forcer (coil), thereby totally eliminating cogging. Shaft motors are capable of high thrust, for example 2340N with a single forcer and 9360N using four forcers (parallel plus tandem drive). SICK Encoders Position Wimbledon Roof Critical to the operation of the roof over Wimbledon's Centre Court is the accurate positioning provided by linear encoders from SICK for each of the 10 77m long, 100-tonne roof trusses. Engineered, manufactured and assembled by specialist hoist and crane designers Street Crane Xpress for the All England Lawn Tennis Club and its main contractor Galliford Try, the roof trusses run on 80m tracks either side of the court roof. Each truss has a SICK KH53 encoder read head mounted at either end, which monitors the truss position and progress across the roof from the KH53's magnetic measurement scale alongside the running track. They are moved by electric motors on either end of each truss, powered from a bus bar system running the length of the track. Magnetic Encoders Boost Dragster Speed Visitors to Renishaw's stand at Mach 2008 (hall 5, stand 5140) will be able to see Team Salakazi's KTM Super Twin nitromethane fuelled dragster which takes just 6.7 seconds to cover a 402m race track, achieving speeds of around 322km/h. Aided by Renishaw's rotary magnetic encoders that monitor crankshaft position and clutch speed, this 360kg 'rocket' generates 1417kW from just a 1995 cc engine. Not many people would even consider sitting astride a snarling 1417kW engine travelling at over 300km per hour. But Jaska Salakazi from Finland has made a career of it, becoming the first person in the world to break the seven-second barrier over 402m on a Super Twin Top Fuel bike.
