Gas Analyser Helps Reveal Nitrabar Success A portable FTIR multi-parameter gas analyser from Quantitech is helping researchers at the University of Strathclyde prove the efficacy of a technique that helps remove nitrates from groundwater. The Nitrabar system uses permeable reactive barrier technology and consists of a trench containing a mixture of natural materials, which removes nitrate from shallow groundwater immediately before it enters rivers or lakes. A key feature of the Nitrabar system is its ability to convert dissolved nitrate in the groundwater to harmless nitrogen gas through the action of bacteria. This process is known as denitrification and involves a transition from nitrate (NO3) to nitrite (NO2), to nitric oxide gas (NO), to nitrous oxide gas (N2O) and ultimately to nitrogen gas (N2). Turbidity Analyser Monitors Water Quality The Triton TR8 turbidity analyser, from Electro-Chemical Devices, provides water quality monitoring using a multi-beam optical sensor, intelligent electronics and self-cleaning technology. The Triton TR8 TA's sensor measures turbidity with a multi-beam optical assembly. The first light beam is a reference detector that compensates for changes in the LED light source caused by ageing or other variables. The second light beam detects the short path length, which is best for high concentration measurement. The third light beam measures the longer path length, which is best for lower concentrations. With its intelligent microprocessor-based design, the Triton TR8 TA's sensor electronics constantly adjusts turbidity signal readings versus the reference detector for measurement accuracy. Protea Introduces 204M FTIR Analyser Protea, a UKAS-accredited monitoring organisation specialising in the use of FTIR for IPPC compliance and process emissions monitoring, has unveiled its 204M FTIR analyser. The analyser is capable of identifying and quantifying any organic compound (and most inorganic compounds) and, in conjunction with the company's in-house continuous logging flow meter, it can produce accurate real-time emissions profiles. Protea uses its FTIR for a variety of applications from batch chemical and pharmaceutical profiling to general emissions compliance work and in the application of BS EN 14181. The company will display its products at MCerts 2009 on 29-30 April at the Bretby Conference Centre in Staffordshire, UK.
